Just bought an nsx!

Hey everyone,

Been a long-time lurker, actually been an avid reader for a few years, and searching for an NSX for about 2 years, although not pro-actively. Anyway I traded in my s2000 for a 142k mile NA1 and have already made a list of things I need to do...my wallet is wincing already!

I've just been through the whole Dali racing catalogue and picked out a number of things I want: NSX-R spoiler, CF mesh engine cover, OEM mats and was also thinking should I get some service parts at the same time as they seem quite cheap compared to over here? What should I be looking for though?

At the moment I'm thinking: a couple of air filters and oil filters, fuel filter, NGK plugs, thermostat (need to check service history to see if its been done) and 90k service pack - although I don't know if the service pack will be of any use to me? The car was serviced at Chiswick Honda in January this year so can I ring them up and get a copy of what they replaced/advised to replace etc? I'm wondering whether to replace the discs and pads as well for peace of mind?

Sorry for what I presume are very obvious questions, the process of going from an avid admirer of the car to an actual owner is a massive change of perspective and I realise all I'd been reading about for the past few years is the history and not about what is involved as an owner!

Wow! Another new ember and first time owner. Congrats!

Best thing to do first is go through the history you have or can check. No point in buying the 90k service pack if that service has just been carried out. However if you have no record of it, or it's been over 4 years since it was last done, then it would be worth buying. The service pack will have the oil filter with it and the spark plugs too, so need to double up, and anyway, those items are cheap enough from your local dealer, spark plugs you can get in any motor factors or on line.

I would heed the warnings around the web regarding buying from Dali. Plenty of stuff on here and NSXPrime about his shenanigans. Read, and make your own decision....plenty of other US dealers that are as cheap or cheaper and that you can rely upon.
I probably wouldn't buy mats from him either as they'd probably be for a LHD car too!

I need to get the original (well facelift) alloys refurbed as the paint on them has bubbled, I'm torn between getting anthracite or sticking with silver! Any opinions? The car is Charlotte Green by the way.

I've also noticed that there's a few members on here in the Midlands? Do you guys have any local meet ups or would you like to do one? It'd be nice to put a face to any owners I may 'bump' into on the roads :)

SOS are an absolute rip off for shipping to the UK, whereas Dali will get you a sensible price.

as for the aftermarket parts i.e type r spoiler, engine cover ... these are a nitemare to purchase due to their perceived shipping size. Mark @ Dali is going through process for me etc at the mo ... its hundreds of dollars

for genuine parts etc dali is hard to beat

as above stated find out what work has been done before splashing out ... if no history start reading Kaz's and Sudesh's posts as i m sure u have if u have been lurking

Welcome and congrats. The NSX looks great in Charlotte ... does it have tan or black interior, and is it Coupe or Targa?

Is this to be a weekend car or daily driver?

Your enthusiasm to personalise your new NSX is great, however I would suggest you catch your breath, check for sure the history and enjoy it as OEM for a short while and maybe meet a few owners to see how various mods look in the flesh? You may also consider the Kaz health check if you're unable to piece together a solid history. His 150 point check will give you a very clear opinion as to what you might want to spend your ££ on before you spend it on cosmetics, particularly if its going to be a daily.

For OEM parts the US Acura dealers do seem to be offering many owners good services and prices, just be wary of large items when shipping.

With regards to your wheel colour question ... when I refurbed mine I went with the Honda Pewter Grey, colour code NH537. I've not seen this done on a Charlotte but its close to my Magnum Grey and I think it would give it a modern yet subtle update.

If you have the Tan trim, have a look through Sudesh' refresh thread. He updated a Charlotte interior with great impact by colour changing the carpets.

As for getting a meet together, never by shy to organise one! Early morning drives ahead of brekkie is popular now the mornings are lighter. Not sure where in the Midlands you are, but if you organise it with enough notice, I'll always try to join a meet wherever it is!

put it like this then ... rubber coolant cover (small and lightweight ... cost for SOS to ship I was charged over $50 then on top of that i had full customs charges etc on top

dali sent me manifolds (headers) (big and heavy) for $130+ for shipping ... and my customs charges were far less than above.

both used USPS as well ... go figure

SOS are a good outfit but reluctant to use based on shipping charges for past experiences

As with declaring values ... if it saves me money at this end I for one will not complain regarding RIP OFF Britain, at the end of the day mark has to keep things right at his end too, up to him. i dont ask him to do me favours i get a price and i pay via paypal.

I queried both times re SOS re price but they stated 'thats what it was' (?) ... unfortunately i was in a position that i needed the parts at the time or alternative supplier would have been sought. and i was not going down the route of well one supplier can do this blah blah else face the prospect of them not selling it to me in the end ... I like SOS ... or should that read $0$ ;) but shipping is a mystery in terms of charges.

btw, glad you see that shipping the cover was 'very expensive' ... i was stunned at the cost :angry:

Also for my na1 alloys I got them powder coated in black, which I think were done really well and hide alot of the dirt :) goes very well with red calipers

I actually went down today and spoke with them. They seem ok, though I don't think they're going to be able to match the Pewter Grey that Paul has, they asked for a RAL? code for the colour but I'm not sure they're gonna match that paint colour through powdercoating in any case.

After pondering all day about it I think I'm going to go with a bright silver, as the dark colours may just distort the 'balance' of the look if you get what I mean...

You wont have to buy new garnishes or clips yourself, they will be covered by the insurance. The bottom screen garnish is easy to get off but as Sudesh says, the £5 a go clips are very fragile and probably won't survive, again, these will be replaced by the screen company. Doubt if the screen company will have any of the parts because they all have to come from Honda, including the screen.
Find out if there is a limit on your windscreen cover. Mine was £1K. If you shop around you should just about get it done for that...

Just to chime in on the windscreen, after a battle with insurance over cost I had my screen replaced at Autoglass, the screen had to be ordered in and took a couple of months but they fitted it perfectly. Customer bill was circa £2000 installed so like me you may need to fight for it. Dreading my policy renewal!

Autoglass were the most expensive when I was quoted. National mobile windscreens were the ones who fitted mine. Because I knew I only had £1K to spend I just challenged them to be able to do it for that. They did, but said they didn't make hardly anything on it.

Out of curiosity does everyone have their OEM toolkits? I peeked under the boot cover and found a complete (probably never used!) toolkit including a Honda tyre pressure and depth gauge! Really impressed :)

Tool kits ought to be there - there's a few oddities (most notably the air pump) that are unique to the car.

For wheels, I'd suggest a no4 (or is it no5?) bright silver powdercoat - they have the larger metalflakes and liven up the dark body finish a bit:

Unless you're really bold & go for a Mugen bronze, anything else will likely be too dark/not contrasty enough.

I've tried looking on Prime but it doesn't seem too clear and I can't seem to get it round my head, is there a pattern where it goes A service, B service, C service, A service etc? The Honda schedule only seems to go up to 90k miles!

Been looking through the history of the car (and gosh did the second owner shell out a lot, one trip to Honda cost him £14.2k!) the last time the spark plugs were changed were Oct 2006 (22k miles ago) and Prime says it should be changed every 6yrs/60k miles so I should change them this year then?

Also the fuel filter was last changed then too as far as I can tell (I haven't got the last 3 service invoices, all from Chiswick Honda - would they keep copies at the dealer?) so I guess it'd be best if I changed that too if Chiswick didn't do it?

And what is all the talk about the water pump? The service schedule only lists to inspect at 6yrs/90k miles...is it advisable to replace at a certain point as they're known to fail?

Finally the schedule says to change the ABS high pressure hose - I can't seem to find it in the invoices would be be down as: 'supply and fit brake pip' H57090SL0J00 001472/Pipe accumlat £9.03?

Nice job! No-one can match that colour in PC; it's wet paint only, which falls off. Not as bad as I thought though, TBH.

He decided to replace loads of stuff before he sold I think! All for alloys to the later style, and loads of manifold covers etc! Hope I never experience a bill like that, I'd faint! I think true reality is setting in that this IS a supercar with supercar prices if things go wrong, so I'm praying that proper prevention will see me through!

Is there any warning signs of an upcoming failure of the water pump? I saw in the history that they had a coolant leak problem at some point, which was sorted by a engine strip down and rebuild with new gaskets etc. I've read (http://www.nsxcb.co.uk/showthread.php?9806-New-Owner-at-long-last/page3) that its cheaper to source from the US?
