Audio Head Unit – lots of them 01

Back to mechanical service mode now so aiming to finish updating the blog related to the electronics service.
After posting this one, just need the one for the Gauge Cluster as serviced so many of them recently.

By the way, due to recent dramatic change in temperature, please check your tyre pressure regularly.

With not hard enough side-shoulder on AD08RS, somewhat downgraded compound and stiff Type-S suspension, didn’t enjoy driving recently.
I change/check tyre pressure at least once a week but recently, had to adjust it every few days.

One time, the tyre was just jumping at every bump due to sudden increase in temperature but few hours later, it got fine.
Then the other day, it was so cold and felt like the side shoulder was collapsing.
Even started raining and since it rained for the first time in many weeks, the dust lifted on the road surface was everywhere.
Felt significant loss of tyre grip while going through the roundabout so not comfortable.

Spoke too early about the forum server.

Was stable recently but then ended up re-booting every few hours 2 weeks ago….
Seems back to stable condition now.
Hope it will stay like that for now.

Another catch up updating the blog.
This time, refurbishing lots of audio head units.

#1: Short circuit at the middle board.

As reported previously, this is the first OEM head unit with such issue despite being refurbished in the past.

Until now, none of the head unit required service at the middle board unless it got damaged by issues at other part of the head unit.

This NSX had another strange short circuit issue inside the footwell speaker box and most likely contributed to this middle board failure.

I now have some idea on what to look for but only one sample case so not enough to share the theory.

The owner loves listening to the music while driving.

So, while investigating the issue on his audio head unit, installed mine on his NSX.

Mine is JDM so limited FM freq. range without the expander but still managed to tune into his favorite radio stations.

And of course the CD mode works fine so he is happy.

After repairing the middle circuit board, installed his audio head unit on my NSX.

This photo was taken in mid/June when I removed it from my NSX.

At that time, already covered over 780miles of test driving session without any issues.

Now it's back on my NSX again and by now, over 800miles covered and still counting.

I would say if something happens again, we need to look into new areas for the cause.

#2: Fluid spilled inside.

Another head unit with cracking noise issue.

The usual capacitor leakage at the bottom board.

However, considering the state of the bottom board, quite surprised with much more leakage at the power I/F compared to all other units.

But with this one, the most unusual finding was the trace of significant amount of fluid inside.

Even the display module had the trace of fluid.

Cleaned as much as possible, tested using my NSX, went through the usual procedure including resetting the cassette cleaning stauts and happy with the result.
